Years back when I was really struggling my Dad offered me a deal: if I could sell some cemetery plots my grandpa left him I could keep half the money. I agreed, my Dad sent me the deeds to the plot. I didn't have any luck selling them but tonight I decided to read them in full and EXCUSE ME 😳😳😳😳😳😳

This hit me like a ton of bricks
Among the most beautiful moments we shared—I mean it sincerely—was that conversation down at the hall* with the president, the secretary-treasurer, and another business agent days after I got terminated for the second time since becoming a head steward. Two times within eight months. You told me about your experience among the immigrant workers of an auto parts distributor who had just gotten organized, affiliated with Local No. 41, and ratified their first contract. You said you admired my passion—and you meant it sincerely, for once—and that it reminded you of the fiery immigrant workers. Without using these words, you conveyed, “those are your people.” Then J— developed your thought further. The trouble, he claimed, is that UPS drivers see themselves as upper-middle-class, unlike the freshly-unionized immigrant workers. UPS drivers weren’t passionate, weren’t bold, weren’t willing to sacrifice: they would use and abuse a union steward like me. “They’ll let you fight their fights all day long, and cheer you on, but when you’re in trouble, when you need their support, they’ll disappear.”
