What’s interesting is that they intentionally changed it to this headline using “covid alarmists” after the article had already been published. Here’s a side by side comparison (credit to @catinthehat.bsky.social), with the original headline on the left (still shows up on a Google search too).

This is a document from the government of Canada from 2022. They set their own criteria to identify and create a plan of action for a “worst-case Covid scenario”, which we have now not only met, but exceeded. Yet nothing is being done by PH to implement any of the mitigations. We’ve been abandoned.
Planning for reasonable worst case Covid scenario to identify preparedness and response needs if faced with this scenario: - A large wave with a peak of prolonged durations similar to Omicron wave - High seasonal peak in winter occurs concurrently with other respiratory pathogens - Similar timing of peaks across the country - New VOC with high transmissibility, increased severity and immune escape properties becomes dominant - There is reluctance to take the vaccines, reducing vaccine coverage - Available vaccines do not significantly reduce transmission and confer long term immunity - Available treatment is less effective against dominant variant - Weak/non-sustained post infection (recovered cases become susceptible again) - Demand for health care resources (hospitalizations, ICU beds etc) exceeds system capacity - Shortage of health care providers - Low level of compliance with public health measures - Permeation of mis/disinfo in society or loss of public trust/confidence

This is a really great piece by @jessicawildfire.bsky.social that explores how lies work and the ways in which we can push back against them to bring light to the truth, particularly within the context of the ongoing COVID pandemic.

This passage near the end is as inspirational as it is eloquent:
There's only one way to fight big lies. We have to repeat the truth just as often, just as loudly, with just as much conviction. We have to make the truth appealing, even funny. We have to do it every single day, even on the days when everything feels hopeless. In fact, those are the days that matter most. We need as many people as possible speaking the truth in every kind of way. We need protests. We need articles. We need podcasts. We need tweets. We need art. We need music. We need memes. We need the truth presented politely over the dinner table, and we need it shouted in the streets. We need it with a smile, and we need it dripping with sarcasm. We need it on t-shirts. We need it on billboards. We need it all.

Both COVID & flu cause more health issues after acute phase of illness (long Covid/flu). More than 1/2 of death & disability occur in the months after infection compared to first 30 days

Impact on Different Organ Systems:

COVID is a more multi-systemic disease than flu, while flu is more respiratory than COVID.

Risks were higher in COVID for every organ system except for the pulmonary system. As such, the flu had only a higher risk of causing lung-related issues.

COVID was far riskier for a wider range of health issues (stroke, cognitive impairment, kidney disease, cardiac arrest, fatigue) examined across nearly all organ systems.

COVID carried a 68% increased risk (64 of 94 health issues studied) compared to only 6% (6 of 94) among the flu

People with COVID had a 50% higher risk of death compared to those with seasonal flu.

For every 100 people with COVID, approximately 8 more died than those with the flu.
