For those who need context, here's the absolute tripe that the "well meaning" liberal boomers are sharing on Facebook right now, and I imagine other platforms

This set of advice not only is absent of historical context, but it will get you killed

The liberal fear of "Anarchists" will get us killed

When you think "It's okay, one gorilla might beat one guy but a hundred have this no problem, a hundred is a LOT of people" but then the gorilla pulls out his 2025 top tier Board Breaker deck and you're still playing a 2013 Gladiator Beasts Contact Fusion deck.
(I'm getting sent to the shadow realm)

Day 1 - The Gorgonopsid (Primeval)

I don't know why, of all Prehistoric animals, this particular therapsid enchants me so much, But I love this thing. By far my favorite "Extinct Animal as a Monster" in media.
The Scene where it fights a predator from the future is pure cinema

Damn, I'm just rolling "Funny Best Friend" Archetypes in the pop culture horoscopes too huh?

But in actuality this is apparently just my archetype with casting directors and on one hand I want to play different roles, but on the other I kinda like it? Like, it's a very safe space to operate in.

Other small mammals I think could serve a similar benefit would be any species of Rabbit or squirrel, both are hyper-present in zoos both as part of collections and incidental wildlife, and both are quite popular with the public (I'm also partial to any of the marmots here)
February 12, 2025 at 9:37 PM
Not only because they use those rocky habitats, but Hyraxes have been cohabitated with lots of other species. Klipspringer, Aardvark, Meerkat, Cape Porcupine all animals in the game.
Additionally, they use a lot of vertical space in an exhibit, giving habitat designers more space to play with.
February 12, 2025 at 9:37 PM
So what's the Texture Species I think would be good additions (ignoring birds and reptiles already mentioned)? Klipspringer and Muntjac would be good, but antelope make up by FAR the biggest proportion of taxa in game. I think I'd reccomend the Rock Hyrax!
February 12, 2025 at 9:37 PM
Finally, other "texture" species tend to be smaller animals that can use habitat space other species won't use. Some species, like Hyrax and Klipspringer, prefer steep, rocky, cliff like habitat that other taxa would find suboptimal.
February 12, 2025 at 9:37 PM
Additionally, especially in zoos with large bodies of water, "Texture Species" tend to be native wildlife that become part of the artificial ecology. in the Southeast US, this is often large native turtles and alligators, and in SE Asia and South America, it's often monkeys and otters.

These can be species like the Egyptian Goose and Guinea Fowl, which are often intentionally added to exhibits with African Plains Game as they cohabitate in the wild. This formula between ungulates and continentally pertinent birds is probably the most common example.

Planet Zoo has a few already!
The Peacock is likely the most iconic, but the Mute Swan, Armadillo, and almost every species in the Twilight pack fill spots in the roster.
A "Texture" species, by my definition, is a taxa that adds dimension to the "setting" of the zoo and the habitats in it.
February 12, 2025 at 9:37 PM
When you think about zoos, they aren't only loved for having animals on display, but also for providing relatively naturalistic "wild spaces" for native wildlife to find some respite. Zoos are typically more animal friendly city parks, so you want to see species you'd find in those parks.

These are fun and easy to make,
I can talk about non mammalian taxa, especially birds, that feel somewhat lacking, but Planet Zoo does still have some mammal gaps (in my opinion). As I've talked about my desire for ducks and aquatic turtles, variety in species add texture! so let's talk "Texture"
February 12, 2025 at 9:37 PM
Other Shorebirds that are popular in Zoos and I think would make a good candidate for addition are
Night Herons
Takahe (or any Gallinules)
Stone Curlews
and especially Ibises!
February 7, 2025 at 7:27 PM
Today's species I'd like to see added to Planet Zoo is the Great White Pelican, but really, any Pelican would be a good addition. Personally I think this game needs more Pond-Dwelling animals as small waterways are a staple of the topography of my favorite zoos

Can't believe I forgot to include him, I am feeling like such a Hack-Fraud right now

Leaf Productions has made a Coconut Crab mod for PZ, though as a "Habitat Animal" it's highly limited in motion, with an "Exhibit Animal" contained in the cases, like most of the inverts currently in game.

Coconut Crab I can see not being highly likely, but it's a fun idea!

Dallas World Aquarium has historically housed them with Rhino iguanas, and several other facilities have hosted them as well in large exhibits similar to those you'd find something like a Dwarf Caiman, or other cat-dog sized tropical animal.
Due to the temperature/humidity, these are indoors
February 4, 2025 at 12:47 AM
Our next suggestion, I believe, is the most unique suggestion for a habitat species, and one I've seen get quite a bit of Steam. The Coconut Crab!

This Massive Terrestrial Hermit Crab is known for having a wide range through Pacific Islands, and for climbing trees!

I could go on for HOURS on excellent Gallinaceous (Turkey-like) birds to add, in the Americas Alone we have the Sage Grouse, Ocellated Turkey, Great Currassow, and Crested Screamer (technically an anseriiforme, but similar to a galliforme), all of which are found and bred in Zoos!
January 30, 2025 at 7:32 PM
One of my favorite Zoo Tycoon mods was the Aurora Designs Wild Turkey
and Narwhaler, an EXCELLENT member of the PZ modding community has made a good one, though the limits of modding restrict the "transformation" of the male turkey display which makes it a great candidate for an official DLC!
January 30, 2025 at 7:32 PM
My next suggestion is, I will admit, an entirely selfish one.

I LOVE Galliformes, and the game currently has the Peafowl and Chicken, both are good, but I want more!

Personally, one I was hoping we'd get in the Barnyard Pack is the Wild Turkey.

A truly excellent North American species
