Working on a oneshot for tomorrow’s prompt — ‘Don’t fear the Reaper’ — but not sure if I’ll make it, so enjoy a snippet in the meantime.

It’s yet untitled but it’s the story of a Ben who’s convinced he sold his soul to the Devil during the Great War.

As he brushes her off, pretends to ignore their long-standing connection, as he breaks their engagement - "keep my grandmother's ring, I don't care, neither does she, just don't come back," - and tells her to forget him. "Jack," she says as he takes her hand, gently as always, the sensation, as always, having a zing of the electric to flow through her at his touch as his skin touches her, and she doesn't know why she can't but feel menace as she looks into his eyes, the green of the hazel seemingly more pronounced than usual, even given the dim light of the observation room. "I'm not sure what's going on...I'm not sure why l've been brought here." Why you've had me brought here. It's the only explanation given everything, and while she doesn't know what circumstances have changed since she was last here in this clinic, all of three days ago, something clearly has. There's a deference in the approach of the men who've walked her through the halls tonight; there had been a tone to their voice when they'd spoken of the 'Doc', a deeper deference in their words that hadn't been there before. She can't but fear that the 'Doc' is now his own boss in ways he hadn't been - exactly - before. It's impossible not to fear that - as he hadn't before — he alone determines her fate. Afraid in ways she hadn't been before his men had knocked on her door, afraid as she shouldn't be sitting across from the man who has always protected her, mentored her, guided her, in this new life she's been caught up, terrified by the gleam in the eyes of the man who shares her bed more often than not, Samira Mohan understands suddenly how a fox feels the moment it realize its has its leg caught in a trap. "Samira, my dear, dear Dr. Mohan," he pronounces her surname as flawlessly as he has these last months since first meeting her; she'd only had to correct him once, upon meeting him; all of a sudden, she feels the menace in how perfectly it slides off his tongue, "it's nothing to worry about, just a correction needing to be made." A harsh swallow, Samira can feel as she forces herself to breathe. "As you might have guessed, sweetheart, I finally decided to buy my partner out of the practice," and she doesn't want to know what that entailed, “and in the process, I'm afraid he decided to spill a few...financial details I hadn't known.” He can't know, he can't. "And, I have to tell you, sweetheart- honestly, I am a little disappointed in you, Samira." Even after everything, even as the panic surges through her veins at the thought of hwat he knows, about the thought of what he might do - there's a reason she hadn't told him, after all, even if she had refused to admit to herself why she wouldn't, there's a reason she had known, a realization she had known to be so true she had buried it down, deep inside - even after all that, she still feels it, the bite of his words. Because it does sting, as did, to think that Jack would be disappointed in her.

There’s not a flicker of the lights as she walked into the clinic, as always everything is perfectly in order and meticulously maintained. Located in a quiet suburb to the west of Pittsburgh, only a short fifteen minute drive from Samira’s spiritual if not actual home at the Pittsburgh Medical Trauma Centre (or as its residents less than affectionately referred to it, the Pitt), the building sits slightly apart from the other low-rise buildings of this nondescript commercial block, with plenty of parking at the back, out of view of the security cameras of the nearby building and near the clinic’s main, heavily secured door. Cool air seeps out from the ventilation system; the skin of Samira’s bared arms pimples with the sensation; she can’t help but shiver, and not just from the cold. She’s been here a million times this past year – it’s been fourteen months by now since her visit, she realizes with a slight shock – or at least it seems so, but never like this. Of course, she’s not usually bracketed by two thugs with more neck than humour walking in. They are very, very careful not to touch her, or even come close, but the threat is there, just lingering in the air, just as it had been when she’d opened the door to her condo half-an-hour ago, having somehow made their way in without checking in with her concierge and in defiance of the buildings state-of-the-art security system.
