6) I added a "Camp" tier (level 1-4) to get the players accustomed to a place they can store their stuff and their collected allies while they adventure. (Think BG3 camps.) I don't want to spring a fully-formed Bastion on the party at level 5.

5) The party shares a single Bastion. I would relax this if a player really wanted an independent place, but PCs rarely exist separately from the party/play group. I also divided Bastion growth into Tiers (linked to the old system's level-limits) and special facilities have tiers of growth to match.

4) I codified "Bastion Events" into things that happen twice per character level, removing them from the idle "Maintain" process. These follow a narrative structure that makes the Bastion important without requiring the PCs to drop their quest to return and protect their property.

3) I made the supernatural effects into upgrades for special facilities, "Amenities" that only Bastions can acquire. These have prerequisites as special facilities used to have. The Bastion gets a limited number by party level but can trade them out as they level.

2) I expanded the list of special facilities and stripped them of their supernatural effects. Any property can have these now, not just Bastions. The Bastion still gets some for free but the players can buy more with gold.

1) I axed basic facilities. Let the players have whatever layout they want. This is not the time to quibble about coins. It has no effect on gameplay or encounter balance.

I agree with your criticisms of the Bastion system. I actually feel bad for being so critical of it. The idea is extremely popular but the system needed a lot more time in the oven. I ended up rewriting almost every part of it for my games.
