Excited to share our new preprint on the discharge of granular materials from a silo. Led by @ramsudhirsharma.bsky.social , we went after a simple question: What is the flow rate through the opening? The answer turns out to be "simple" and quite general. See more here: arxiv.org/abs/2509.14415 [1/4]

We have a double-header out this week: two papers examining how the stress-force-fabric relation manifests in both annular shear (PRL doi.org/10.1103/gp8t...) and more varied loading conditions (PRE doi.org/10.1103/rv25...). The anisotropies in the contact forces set the response to loading, (1/3)
Particle Scale Anisotropy Controls Bulk Properties in Sheared Granular Materials
The bulk dynamics of dense granular materials arise through a combination of particle-scale and mesoscale effects. Theoretical and numerical studies have shown that collective effects are created by p...

I had the pleasure of being a #Fulbright scholar in @granmech.bsky.social 's lab at IISc Bangalore last year, where grad student Abrar Naseer is doing photoelastic force measurements on bonded pairs of particles (my lab just does single ones!) Here's the first preprint: arxiv.org/abs/2507.19214
Micromechanics of compressive and tensile forces in partially-bonded granular materials
In granular media, the presence of even small amounts of interparticle cohesion manifests as an increase in the bulk strength and stiffness, effects that are typically associated with an increase in t...

Our new study, led by Philippe Gondret and Cyprien Morize (FAST Laboratory), part of Wladimir Sarlin's PhD, has just been published in Journal of Fluid Mechanics. It explores how impulsive motions generate waves. doi.org/10.1017/jfm.... @univparissaclay.bsky.social @univofmaryland.bsky.social

Excited to present some recent work at march meeting, where we revisit the constant mass flux of particles through apertures! A simple framework, lots of experiments and some ideas on packing.
Would love for you to stop by session MAR-M62 on Wed afternoon (3/19) :) #APSSummit25
The final two talks will be on Wednesday and will focus on granular flows. Ram will present results on the gravity-driven flux of particles, or “How fast does your hourglass empty?”

Excited to share our new paper in @pnas.org doi.org/10.1073/pnas...! Ice cubes often appear cloudy because, as water freezes, air bubbles get trapped and scatter light. But how does freezing rate affect the shape of the bubbles?

It feels crappy to "brag" about a new paper while science is being dismantled. But in the spirit of #standupforscience i guess it's good for us to remember what we're doing this for.
