The calamity mystery makes me speculate on freedom of movement and freedom of cultural diversity. Like, is pop. saturation a threshold of some kind that gives way to change once the commons get fully unlocked, then played out, by a given sustenance/tech model?

Ha, that's a fun inference to make. I keep a very loose mental list of non-academic folks that compulsively cite their resources in writing and speech. It's notable!

Otoh I feel a lot of writing is meant to command a new reality from the reader, not persuade them indirectly through precedent
