Trump has now unilaterally bombed Iran, despite the entire US intelligence community’s longtime consensus that Iran has no military nuclear program.

Thank you to my editors and sources. It looks excellent in the print magazine too!

A shocking first day of Trump term 2: all the tech billionaires at the inauguration; illegal attacks on the US citizenship & asylum systems; withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement; more oil & gas projects, including in a wildlife refuge; and revoking a transition to EVs.

“You can’t fight in here—this is the War Room!” Makes as much sense as “de-escalation through escalation.”

I rewatched Dr. Strangelove, partly to prepare myself in case we get a cabinet member (RFK Jr.) obsessed with the fluoridation of water.

I’m proud of my awards from the San Francisco Press Club! They’re for pieces I wrote for WIRED and Undark magazine, about space pollution, SpaceX rockets, and the devastation in Gaza.

As I make my own book-writing plans/dreams, looking forward to this #SciWri24 event with some excellent science writers, authors, and friends: Rebecca Boyle, Ferris Jabr, Zoë Schlanger, and Brandon Keim.

Need a beer to watch this debate. Here’s hoping we’ll see questions about climate policy (such as labor-friendly green jobs, not just energy supplies), or humane immigration reform (not “border security”), or ending US support for two wars (not just “supporting our allies”).

If I were still a WIRED reporter, I totally would’ve written a big piece about the Polaris Dawn mission launching tomorrow! And about rising commercial space star Jared Isaacman. I moderated a panel with him at WIRED’s 30th anniversary event. (Layoffs hit two days later.)

Forgot to share some good news earlier. As of a couple months ago, I’m a contributor to Undark magazine! I’m glad to join esteemed colleagues and friends, including @smjyoti.bsky.social & Sarah Scoles.

Happy eclipse day, everybody! It’s already begun in Mazatlan. El Gran Eclipse Americano!

Good point by Dr. Angela Speck: While total solar eclipses are common, a given spot on Earth might only see one every 375 years! Time to become an eclipse chaser. #ReportingTheEclipse

Just got two interesting books from the library. I’m excited to read Blood in the Machine by @bcmerchant.bsky.social and The Great Displacement by Jake Bittle.

I’m enjoying reading @rboyle31.bsky.social’s new book, eloquently and poignantly written, about our mysterious lunar neighbor. I recommend it!

Interesting piece about community cats by Jonathan Franzen, but I didn't like this out-of-the-blue paragraph, grouping No Kill advocates and critics of xenophobia and police violence together and painting them all as naive. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

As a parting gift, I loved this cover! Thank you for this, WIRED friends (especially Alyssa Walker).
