...but worse than that, it's that career switches into relevant private-sector fields are also now fraught with difficulty.

...is so competitive that unless you've been deliberately planning your career to try and land one of these posts from Day 1, just don't bother.

I saw someone on Twitter years ago say that it's not just that academia is dying, it's that para-academia is dead...

Too old for grad schemes, classified as a flight risk, too underexperienced or too overqualified for most office jobs, and every field you might have actual experience in or transferable skills for (museums, libraries, publishing, journalism, heritage, even bid writing)...
