At Enfield Primary School I spent quite a lot of time as milk monitor, ink-well monitor and stationery shop monitor. My most anxiety-causing role was pressing the button to announce the end of periods.

My class (I am standing seventh from the left in the back row) included a goodly mix of characters, from crew cut rebels to immigrants from Poland and other eastern European countries, and of course me, a "pom". I always wonder what lives and adventures my peers have experienced. I love this photo.

I have sat at that corner table and ordered another pint at that bar in many a seedy pub in my time, and, solitary, imbibed atmospheres of stale beer, cigarette smoke and melancholy, amongst others contemplating their emptying glasses and the meaning of life.

As an oboist I’d like to see/hear Leon Goossens live again. I heard him play the Strauss concerto many years ago and it was wonderful. As a schoolboy I played for him in a masterclass. He was politely encouraging! I still try to emulate his very rich, creamy British tone…
