His full name is Charalambos Charalambous. Bambos is just a nickname.

All modern tramways in the UK use all door boarding, but busses are still front door only (with the occasional exception).

That's selection based on merit, not meritocracy. I want a qualified dentist to treat me, but that doesn't mean that society should be structured on merit. I think we agree a lot more than we disagree, but we're using different terms for things.

Well is that really a meritocracy then? If someone's value and position in society is determined purely based on their merit, where does that leave those with very little merit?

What exactly makes it toxic? Surely the toxic view would be that Trump deserves his job entirely based on his own merit, which is the view Higgins is arguing against.

Say what you will about Bastani (and I certainly disagree with him on many things), but I appreciate his aspiration for a post-scarcity society. Society should allow you to eat so many bananas that you throw up, not ration you to one banana a year as a treat.

And IIRC it was a bill legalising abortion. It still passed, but goes to show that even authoritarian regimes have to at least pretend to care about public opinion sometimes.

Just wait until they start claiming that there's nothing weird about the Volkskammer passing every bill (except one) unanimously.

Why is community solar better than non-community solar? I thought a solar panel was a solar panel. I have nothing against community solar btw, but I don't see why there needs to be a presumption against non-community solar.

I never said anything about the average age of environmentalists. All I said was that there is a cohort of generally older people who use environmentalism as a cudgel to block anything that they think would reduce the value of their homes.
January 24, 2025 at 11:53 AM
And that any concerns about environmentalism are secondary to concerns about property values?

Is it OK if I use that human right to say that you're just a lobbying group for rich pensioners?

At least this was an improvement on his original plan, which was to go to the Farnborough Air Show after getting off an overnight coach from Belgium, and then get to Heathrow in the same day.

I met someone from Malaysia a few years ago while on holiday in Belgium. He had a stopover in London for the day, and Battersea Power Station was the main attraction for him. When I asked why, he said it was simply because it's owned by the Malaysian sovereign wealth fund.
