I remember after watching it in the theater with friends having the discussion afterwards as to whether MacReady was the thing. I agree with those who say it should be left an open question

Bush got what he wanted, even if he couldn't blame Saddam for 9/11. Similarly, Trump may get his way and stir up a violent conflict in this country between MAGA and it's oposition, even if it turns out Charlie Kirk's killer was himself MAGA.

Reminds me of how George W. Bush wanted evidence tying 9/11 to Saddam, but couldn't get any. So he wound up getting us into a war with Iraq based on the false assertion that Saddam was hiding WMD's.
