Two other ideas for contributing factors from base effects:
-Last year had no meaningful payments paid from Los Angeles County for fires (LA likely equals ~5% of all tax payments -- population is 3% of US).
-Penalty-free payments require 110% of prior year (2024).

Not necessarily on 3. December was basically flat in price for the S&P 500 and the whole quarter was only up ~2%. Poor market performance might be explained a bit by tax gain realization.

Trump's tweet was obviously nonsense -- he's just trying to persuade the SC not to undo them. The books are perfectly in order. Everyone who paid a tariff knows what they paid (there are actual receipts). Tariffs usually collected by importers at port of entry so very well-documented.

Star Wars TV shows (other than Andor). For the most part, they aren't good enough for real viewing, but action and, most importantly for exercise, music are there throughout. There are a lot of hours there...

Thirding this. We found dinosaur train for the train-obsessed 4 year old, but he liked the dinosaurs too!

As a parent of this cohort (HS class 2024), I want to underline the lack of standardized testing. Pandemic-era grades flattened, extracurriculars became meaningless, and UC was overloaded with "qualified" applicants. Of course, they admitted underprepared students (and excluded better ones).

Great article. I'm new to the word "de-geekification" but it echoes indie-music culture from the 80s/90s. Indie bands that became popular faced massive backlash from OG fans. Some people (like Elon, perhaps) seem to relish the exclusivity of the fandom more than the object of the fandom.

Interesting move by Nevada, but will it really matter for most people? It seems very unlikely that mortgage lenders will allow borrowers to go without wildfire insurance.

Bean: I think you are an Apple Music user (and spotify) but both now have CD quality music. Apple even has better than CD quality with some added equipment. I’m a CD holdout too (and even have vinyl), but there’s really no point. Your new neighborless house could use some good and loud speakers. ;-)

This is the only proper response to these questions (which appear every year on Nextdoor). Without knowing usage and rate, the phrase “big bill” doesn’t mean anything and usually just means greater use. Seems like you got a 2.5% rate increase.

Kind of a not-so-arbitrary win record to choose. Here's the past 50(!) yrs:

0/1
1/2
1/3
2/4
3/5
3/6
3/7
5/10
5/11
5/12
6/13
6/14

10 yrs of total control (opposed by a Republican party with no positive legislative agenda) vs 12 yrs of control by Republicans.

Democrats need to win elections first.

Good point - should have said "at least". I'd probably go even further back when it comes to his "offbeat" political views. Years prior to 2018 when talking about his Mars ideas he started spewing off a bunch of libertarian direct democracy BS about how free Mars would be for its colonists...

Nice to see Elon's loss. As an fyi, Tesla's beta is ~2.5. The Nasdaq 100 is down 3.5% today and the S&P 500 is down 2.4%. In other words, the market isn't so much punishing Elon or Tesla as it is punishing everyone...

I see what you did with deeper thoughts and early 90s SNL. Btw, Matt Foley clips are on SNL’s YouTube channel and almost the entire SNL catalog (sans music) is on Peacock. Readily available for the kids. They just aren’t watching…

I'll help. Dump their Savings itemization into a spreadsheet and check the sum. Even including the "$8 billion" error, there's only $16.4 billion in itemized contract savings and $144 million in real estate savings.

That’s not what Elon said. He said he deleted the GSA’s 18F office. Whether he did or didn’t, who knows? Is it good or bad? Don’t know. But…he didn’t claim to eliminate Direct File.

Right, but only one of the 2 major fires is in the City of Los Angeles — and not completely. Given the number of miscellaneous political boundaries, Angelenos usually understand all of the County to be our home.
