There’s an old film called Calcutta 71 directed by Mrinal Sen. It’s like 4 different stories set in 4 different decades in Bengal. The 2nd one deals with the 1943 famine & it’s one of the most eerie & disturbing stories I remember watching. Highly recommend it

That's a huge achievement actually to make a single person realize & admit such a thing! I'm ngl I'm kinda interested in reading the story where can I find it? Your substack?

Wow that sucks so bad I'm sorry. This era of media criticism is probably at its lowest right now with shock value & throwing every bit of critical thinking out of the window in order to garner attention has increased to a fever pitch

To be clear, the solution I'm calling stupid is the original one about referring to authors as rapists for their characters having sex lol

It's really stupid as a solution from that perspective. Like there's an area of criticism when talking about author's complicity, such as rudyard kipling & Indians . But the objective must be how authors can critically reflect on themselves in relation & find new ways of artistic expressions

Burton shows how easy it is to fall prey to the aesthetics of gothic art without having enough meat on the bone. It gets even worse with his later films where even the aesthetics become awful & lacking in any good taste.
