Better than,” Kylo grits out. He turns to her, eyes blazing. “You certainly didn’t seem prepared to do anything about it.” “I—you—” For seconds, Rey is so incandescent she can’t form a coherent thought. Throat tight and fists clenched, she burns at the ignorance of his accusation. “You think I wasn’t sickened by it? I was! It was vile! But I—the actual subject of the his thoughts—was able to ignore them and focus on getting the information we needed! He so obviously did it to distract us—you! You played right into their hands, again!” There’s barely an inch between them when she finishes. She’s shaking, too, with shock and adrenaline and the harsh reminder of her bondmate’s cruelty that lingers in the satisfied twist of his lips. “No one is permitted to think that way about you, Rey,” Kylo says in his softest, most dangerous tone. His breath is a hot kiss on her mouth, every syllable laced with threat. His fingers flex toward her. Rey jerks back. “Except for you, right?

He clears his throat. “Visit the medbay when we return to the Steadfast and follow their directions. Don’t strain yourself until it’s healed.” Disbelief lifts her brows. “Great advice. I know of others who could use it.” She swears she hears him stifle that dry, throaty sound as he turns, back to her, and begins to undress. His dusty tunic, belt, and undershirt are draped over the end of the interrogation device, his saber’s hilt clinking on the metal. He clearly expects her to go. But Rey is rooted in place by his desert-wide shoulders, speckled with their secret pattern of beauty marks and scarring—and the fresh bruising that blooms an angry purple above his abdominal bandages.

When I was a child.” Her hands still. She glances up in confusion. “What?” Kylo responds in the deadpan she now recognizes as his humor, desert-dry and growing just as familiar. “You really thought my childhood dream was to become a ‘galactic dictator,’ as some refer to me?” “I don’t know,” she says, trying to ease her voice into a similar tone. Imagining the dark thunderstorm of a man sitting opposite her as a child with normal aspirations is bizarre, almost laughable, until she guesses their source. Her heart twists—if not for the dictator, then for the lost boy he once was. And seeing him in nondescript clothing against the market’s backdrop, hands steepled loosely amid the tools and spare parts atop their table, she’s never been able to picture Ben Solo so well.

You need me more than I need you.” “You weren’t the so-called last Jedi then, and a terrorist organization wasn’t attempting to kidnap you.” “Can you really be kidnapped if you’re already held captive?” she snaps—then bites her tongue, realizing she could be foiling her own plans. Another thought surfaces, and it tumbles from her unbidden. “Whose survival do you care about? Your Jedi weapon, or your scavenger plaything?” He takes another step and suddenly he’s close; in her air, the heat of his body joining that of the Buzzard’s hyperdrive. “Both,” he whispers, and she feels the caress of his breath on her lips. But his eyes stay as hard as black beskar shields.

She finds she needn’t have hurried, as Kylo still stands on the dais, dark eyes tracking her inscrutably as she approaches. Her final steps bear the same reluctance as a prisoner before a firing squad. It is all she can do to keep her gaze locked on his face when it’s magnetically drawn lower, along the masculine lines of his body, to the scarred and beauty-marked muscle she knows lies beneath the belt and tunic. Didn’t. The searing touch of the hands that rest at his sides as they slid, gloveless, down her back to grip her rear, guiding her hips in a rhythmic grind against his, and then down her bare thighs to guide— Happen. His mind is closed, but judging by how his eyes heat as they roam her, she suspects his thoughts may run similarly. A brow lifts—presumably at her new garb. Kylo’s lips part, and— “Don’t,” Rey snaps. “I needed new clothes after mine were ruined.”
