This is actually right at the start of the story; Cerulean can't convince Anstey he's no longer a magician, so he forces Anstey to hold onto his magic items. Anstey is iffy about hiring him as the new nanny, so this exchange is done to test their trust.

The items turn into a pocket watch 🎩⏱️✨
