The service between Randolph and Madla is a component of a larger plan to establish service between San Antonio and Austin. Establishing service to the Alamodome can be a stepping-stone to this larger plan.

The cost of the initial two-train system is estimated at $315 million. Just the trains is $82 million. Most of the rest of the cost consists of railroad track improvements. These improvements are both to increase track throughput and to incentivize Union Pacific to agree.
October 1, 2025 at 11:33 PM
There’s an existing track to Randolph and Madla Transit Centers. Two six-car trains on this track can move 10% of the Alamodome capacity. Eight ten-car trains can move the entire added PM crowd — 44,160 passengers per hour.

VIA owns the rail station by the Alamodome (and therefore Project Marvel) already. This station is already connected across the highway by a pedestrian bridge. If the PM land bridge is built, it’ll be even more connected.

Even @TxDOT agrees that this is a good plan! Here’s the same junction, plus powered switches, centralized train control, and a new siding, in their 2024 Texas Rail Plan.
September 11, 2025 at 9:30 PM
To do that, we need to build a new junction between these two tracks, so the intersection looks like this. The red track makes it possible for the trains to go from the Blue track (the Union Pacific Del Rio Subdivision) to the Green track (the UP Austin Subdivision).

Here you can see the route the train takes through San Antonio, and how we’d like it to go.
September 11, 2025 at 9:30 PM
Well, it's because of THIS. See how the tracks cross but don't connect? The station is on the Blue track, but only the Green track goes north to Austin, Dallas, and eventually Chicago. That’s why the train has to back up.

Our next general meeting is this Thursday, August 28 from 7-8 pm. We meet at Eco Centro, 1802 N Main Ave, San Antonio. As always, non-members are welcome to get a taste of what we're about.

The three stations in each city are located at existing transit centers, providing cross-town connectivity. The schedule enables four round trips per day. Once established, additional expansions are easily achievable. (Schedule shown is from south to north.)
June 4, 2025 at 9:22 PM
The 52-minute trip covers six stations (three in each city), four trains a day in each direction, tickets as low as $15–all for as little as $400 million invested and with a single train set. A suggested starting train is one locomotive, two bi-level cars and a cab-coach.

What if there were a train between San Antonio and Austin? One that is faster than driving, convenient, affordable, and could be built this decade? That’s the Minimal Viable Service Plan for Lone Star Rail.
