Rail For Alberta
@railalberta.bsky.social
Non partisan, volunteer-run society dedicated to bringing urban, regional and intercity trains across Alberta.
Alberta is on the verge of creating one of the largest infrastructure projects in provincial history, a regional rail transportation network. Let's not squander this opportunity by only discussing pipelines as infrastructure.

Calgary Transit is running 20-minute headways during one of the largest attended single day events in Calgary. It's not a serious transit service.

Alberta is now officially over 5 million people as of this morning. These people need affordable homes and efficient transportation. Fortunately, trains and transit can help facilitate both of those needs.

👀 Something is really sticking out in the Liberal party platform released today. A federal government that's willing to invest in Alberta Passenger rail. This is a huge commitment and the first time we've seen acknowledgment of this happening from the federal level.

The parts of the world with the best and highest rail ridership, are the places with strong cycling connections. This type of attitude is short-sighted by a government that wants to encourage train use in a future provincial rail plan. Cycling is key to unlocking rail travel.

This is cool, but it's too bad Calgary Transit gave up their transit specific brand and just rolled into generic city service.

Electric trains for the win

Just a couple of pictures of some intercity and regional train travel in a country that's similar to density, city distance, and size to Canada. Not investing in rail travel is policy choice, not physical limitations.

Maybe if we pursue closer relationships with Europe, they can teach us how to build trains cheaper than the United States.

Calgary has roughly 1.5 million citizens as well! We definitely do not have one of the best public transit systems in the world, the BRT here isn't even real BRT. And that green line...don't worry about that.

Said development that they were totally not against but actually voted against.

Did you know there's an old train station still underneath the Calgary Tower?

DYK that the Calgary of the 80s built almost 50% of our current LRT system. 10 years built 3 superate legs of today's system.

Our leaders weren't thinking about how to get more cars into downtown. They were looking at how to move people around our city quickly and efficiently.

Lots of downstream impacts in Italy by building out the rail network.

Ridership statistics for Saudi Arabia. Provide trains and improve service, get more riders. Pretty simple.

Hanging out at the Provincial Passenger Rail Forum, looking forward to hearing lots of train talk and nerding out.

One of those days that should make people question how much they truly enjoy driving. The trains are running as usual.

Friendly reminder when people say Canada is too big for rail travel.

Blue skies and trains are pretty nice.
