It would probably be more beneficial if they were taught about these issues in detail and why they should support it, before they are asked to participate in a campaign.

It is more likely that a fair few players weren't all that bothered to be part of the campaign, but went along with it just for optics. And when they got an excuse to abandon it, they took it. This is an unfortunate reality of mixing these campaigns sport.
