Mid 60’s liberal with love of movies and comedy and women who don’t take shit on line
Robert Redford did lots a great TV in the early 60’s. ‘Nothing in the Dark’ from the Twilight Zone(S-3 E-16) will be particularly poignant viewing today. His early performance in The Iceman Cometh can be seen on YouTube. I hope he gets the tributes he deserves

Re watched
Stage Door on TCM
What a delight. A perfect blend a rapid fire dialogue with effective melodrama. Amazing cast of actresses on their way up and some of best character actors of the era. A delight

New candidate for the worse ending for a romcom ever: ‘The Gilded Lily’ 1935 ends with the rich couple kick a sleeping homeless person off their favorite bench so they can kiss cute!
What a awful movie

Dogme 95 series on Criterion. Watched ‘Italian for Beginners’ for first time. It’s basically a better version of ‘Love Actually’. Quite the surprise

Criterion is currently showcasing the films of Lee Chang-Dong. What a great director. ‘Poetry’ is top 20 of the 2000’s

I hope Mikey Madison’s well deserved Oscar win bring new eyes to her great work in the wonderful show ‘Better Things’ on Hulu/FX. She was always a star!

The speech was longer than the stupid movie

Needed a movie break Saw My Dead Friend Zoe. Completely mis-advertised as a comedy but it’s a very moving, life affirming drama that my audience loved.

Gene Hackman was an all time great. Most under seen great performances:
‘I Never Sang For My Father’ ‘Under Fire’ ‘Night Moves’

If you want an actually funny romcom with an edge, I highly recommend Colin from Accounts on Paramount +. 16 episodes of Aussie fun.

Sing Sing is now On VOD and is the kind of intelligent, moving crowd pleaser that actually used to make money. Domingo should win the Oscar. Stunned it wasn’t nominated for best picture in such a weak year.

Two very different streaming recommendations
Asura on Netflix from the great Japanese director Koreeda is a very good high end drama. Colin From Accounts on Paramount + is an actually funny romcom plus has a cute dog!

For fans of old Romcom/screwball comedies, Criterion is showing the obscure Cary Grant ‘Thirty Day Princess’ and it’s a delight. Preston Sturges co-wrote it and it definitely has his imprint.

Amy Adams is wonderful but ‘Nightbitch’ is an utter failure. Watch ‘Tully’ on Netflix and ‘The Brood’ on Max for superior postpartum drama

100 Years of Solitude on Netflix is a surprisingly faithful adaptation of the great novel and has superb production values. It’s very entertaining and not at all homework the way some classic novel adaptations are.

Shrinking on Apple TV and Somebody Somewhere on HBOMAX are my favorite sitcoms in years. I laugh, I cry and actually feel better about this country for 30 minutes. Of course, HBO cancelled Somebody’ but it went out on top

Movie recommendation
The Seed of the Sacred Fig is a riveting Iranian film, made in secret to avoid government interference. One of the five best of 2024

‘Say Nothing’ on Hulu is one of the best TV shows of the years. Gripping and moving. Deals with complex issues and moral conflicts with intelligent rarely seen on screen.

@screendrafts.bsky.social I just rewatched Rope bc of the draft.
Just don’t get how it’s a top 15 and Stewart is literally my all time favorite actor. No great set pieces and it’s a gimmick

The best streaming service is the cheapest Kanopy.
You just need a library account. Incredible selection of films and television. Just rewatched the most underrated gangster film ever ‘The Friends of Eddie Coyle’.

I rewatched ‘The Quiet Girl’ on Hulu for the third time.
It is a perfect movie. Probably my favorite movie of this decade.

@screendrafts.bsky.social the Hitchcock Draft was probably the best screen draft ever. Certainly the best of the mega drafts. So entertaining and informative!
