The launch of my first book feels like just yesterday. Gayle King gifted me a box of Vicks VapoRub before this interview (if you read the book, you know what that means to me).

At ANIMAYO in the Canary Islands. The island’s animation work, emerging talent, and film tax credit program is second to none.

I first heard of LALIFF as a student at UCLA. I went from volunteer to Executive Director. I had great mentors, including Edward James Olmos. After a decade of uplifting others, I walked away to focus on my own writing and directing. This month, I get to return to @laliff.bsky.social as a filmmaker.

Watching my first short film in a packed theater full of strangers was more nerve-wracking than publishing a book or seeing my first written episode air on national television. Thank you San Luis Obispo International Film Festival for hosting the world premiere of “Sundown.”

Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday is the best single performance in any western. I screamed at the TV as a kid when Roger Ebert told Kilmer at the Oscars red carpet that he would’ve been nominated for a Best Supporting Actor if the studio that released Tombstone would’ve shown the movie to critics.

The fear in our schools is real. The fear of ICE, the fear of parents being ripped away from their families. But what I shared with students was this: If deportation #s are the same now as they were last year, then fear is the point. Remain vigilant, know your rights & take care of one another.

When I wrote Illegally Yours, I simply wanted to write the book I didn’t have when I was in school. Today, the puente project revealed the Illegally Yours community college curriculum for Houston, Texas 🥺

This is not my house, but I wept on the ashes of this home. This was the home of Liesel & Steve. In my book, I refer to them as my “Ma & Pa Kent.” They opened their home to so many of us. Please consider giving to their GoFundMe, not for Liesel and Steve, but for their children. gofund.me/619477cc

I love Altadena. I can’t wait to hike Eaton Canyon again. Until then, please be safe out there.

2024 was a rough year for me, but all transformative years are. Thank you for all the incredible recognitions and invitations this year that reminded me that I’m doing exactly what I was put on this Earth to do — tell stories.

I’m not saying not to read the Pope’s memoir. I’m just saying that my title is much funnier 😌 “Illegally Yours” > “Life”

Deeply grateful to the City of Los Angeles for this recognition of my book “Illegally Yours” 🫶🏽 Thank you Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez and the LA City Council for recognizing the story of this proud Angeleno, who just happens to have been a formerly undocumented American.

Immediately after the elections, I found myself speaking to undocumented students. I couldn’t think of a better use of my time. This is my message to #dreamers to #DACA recipients and to anyone with mixed-status families…

How we spend our next four years is critical. Build community. Organize. Protect and support each other. I’ll be building w/ first generation Americans and undocumented students. I’m grateful to the Puente Project for adding my book to their high school curriculum this year.
