This passage puts me in mind of Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s 2007 poem ‘Pity the Nation’ which he wrote towards the end of George W. Bush’s presidency (and which in turn was inspired by Kahlil Gibran’s poem of the same name, from ‘The Garden of the Prophet’ published in 1933).

When someone says that to me, I check in to my inner self. Either the person is sincere and pure or not. I rely on this inner sense/intuition to not give the time of day or be appreciative of the compliment.
