By teaching our students more about the world we live in AS IT TRULY IS–not through the rose tinted lenses that so much of our curriculum is taught–our students will be better prepared to CHANGE it.

It can look like incorporating the necessarily violent history of American labor, seeing that all the gains workers have achieved over time were FOUGHT for. Blood was shed and lives were lost.

It could be examining publicly available police data and identifying any trends that identify racial discrimination. It could be looking at our constitution and the abuses perpetrated by our government on our own citizens and coming up with constitutional amendments to solidify

fill in the gaps with problem based learning based in critical pedagogy using real world issues in your local community.

That can take shape in a number of different ways, like looking at climate change data, identifying vulnerabilities in our communities and drafting proposals to our local gov'ts.

When examining the societal relations to the means of production through the Base/Superstructure model, teachers have a unique opportunity (in these times, I would say we have a DUTY) to influence the trajectory of our society towards a human-centered society instead of a profit-driven society.

From a class perspective, the ruling class typically dictates the "acceptable" knowledge within curricula that we impart upon our students through the overused and incredibly boring banking system of education (see Paulo Freire's "Pedagogy of the Oppressed").
