#1 Grandpa. They/them. Historian of certain things. Sometimes I whisper questions to the bog and sometimes the bog answers.
This is how you have fun.

I'm also absolutely in love with this little guy. (Oxford, Bodleian Library MS. Bodl. 264: digital.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/objects/ae9f...)

This is going to be my Christmas card this year.

Putting this over here, too. I'm going to start streaming my illuminated manuscript scribing on Twitch and I need branding ideas. Free crocheted scarf to anyone who can come up with a solid one.

Two-parter but physically you make me think of David's dad from Hilda.

My cousin found a letter that my mom wrote to my uncle and it’s pretty fantastic.

For exactly one second, I lived in a perfect world where so many people appreciated the fine and noble blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) that they trended here. But, alas, t'was baseball.

Lake Michigan looked very, very pretty yesterday.

Great day for finding little friends.

Bonus: If you wonder what Grey might have looked like as a kitten, we did foster one of his daughters who looked exactly like him!

Anyway, we love Grey. World’s #1 Grandpa.
October 13, 2025 at 12:54 PM
Now he is a VERY big guy. We were concerned about his weight and wondered if something was wrong with his thyroid. He does get regular vet visits, bloodwork, all his shots, etc. Our vet loves him so much, and the formal diagnosis is, “He’s well-fed, happy, and retired from being feral.” 10/

Sometimes he needs a break, though. He’s the only cat we let outside, and only because he goes about three feet outside the door and naps in the sun. Every time I go outside to relax, he goes with me. My guy is enjoying his retirement. 9/

If we have sick kittens, Grey looks after them. If we have ones that need to be socialized, he’s on it. Feral kittens who won’t let us touch them will curl up to him without hesitation, and then he’ll gently introduce them to us like it was his idea all along. It’s absolutely amazing. 8/

A lot of you know that my mom and I foster kittens. Grey suddenly became foster grandpa to all the kittens we took in. He cleaned them, cuddled them, played gently with them. He curled himself around the tiniest ones. 7/

But here’s the magical part! First, Grey got incredibly affectionate. He let us pet him, then hold him, and then put silly outfits on him. He didn’t know how to purr, or how to lay correctly to be held. All he knew was that it was very, very nice to be loved. 6/

Personally, I joked that Odin was visiting us in the guise of a scarred-up old tomcat.

✅ One eye
✅ Wanderer
✅ All-father (of many kittens)
✅ Haggard and gray

You might notice that Grey isn’t… the prettiest. We noticed right away that he had a messed up eye, scars on his face, missing teeth, and a scarred ear. The docked ear is an indicator that a feral cat has been neutered. The rest of it was a sign that Grey didn’t have an easy life. 4/

And then much to my mom’s chagrin (at the time), I let him inside. 3/

After being neutered, he suddenly became incredibly affectionate over the course of maybe two weeks?

I think more people should know about Grey. He was formerly a feral tomcat in my mom’s backyard who ended fathering a ton of kittens (of HMS Purrabus fame) before we managed to catch him and get some TNR done. There was a point where he was not very friendly. 1/
