IMO and experience, that fear is often over-exaggerated
I maintain cooler temp (~74°F) and keep constant surface disruption from my filter outlet, therefore increasing gas exchange, bringing up the O2 concentrations and releasing unused CO2 from the water
Having a heavily planted tank is also key
