I was talking about this EXACT thing with an English teacher at my kid's HS. When I asked why she said "trendy answer or what I think?" Trendy answer was much like what @jamellebouie.net posted -- introduce to lots of styles. She said she thinks it's because books are expensive and don't last.

Because maybe, just maybe, we care about our neighbors who will suffer without the subsidies? And SNAP should be restored soon, assuming this admin follows the courts. Which they won't BUT MAYBE THAT'S ANOTHER REASON NOT TO CAVE.

A good chunk of those furloughed workers are horrified that these people would cave. Maybe don't think they're a monolith? I can go do a poll in my NoVa neighborhood and I know I'd find they all are willing to suffer for others to have health insurance.
