Extremely close!! She makes okonomiyaki, which the 90s translation occasionally localized as “Japanese pizza” 😆

One of the principles of Ranma is “turn mundane activities into martial arts,” so Ranma literally fights her on a giant cooking griddle while she hurls noodles and sauce at him

Visibility on social media might lead to a job (hired by a company or producing your own merch/monetized content), but what makes art FUN is the connection with other people, being encouraged by others and having conversations about art or fandoms. That’s hard to find online if you don’t have it IRL

This also kinda explains the rise of people genA!-ing art: they’re geared to want the most views/likes/shares, and if their own art isn’t appealing (again, by way of style OR technical skill level), they can click a button to make something that matches a popular art style that may get more traction

…it’s created a more competitive capitalist mindset. You have to make art of a popular subject to even be seen, people scroll past if they don’t like its look (style or technical skill level), no one comments to help or encourage you, and your only measure of success is the number of likes/shares.

…so that if I had 5 friends who regularly checked on my art (via notifications grouped by who posted, instead of a constant stream of EVERYTHING) I was guaranteed 5 kind or helpful comments on my art (and gave them the same). Now that popularity/view count is prioritized, PLUS the infinite scroll…

I’d always thought that the decline in commenting was from a move to platforms with fast-paced scrolls of infinite content that gear the user toward clicking a button then scrolling to the next thing. I hadn’t considered that the community aspect of DeviantArt was more about “building friendships”…

Not to mention all the weird nonsensical ways characters argue with each other or justify what they’re doing. I always accepted it as “it’s a comedy so everything’s just silly,” as an adult it’s like “that’s exactly what navigating social situations and bureaucracy feels like”

Like I always just accepted the characters hearing a prerecorded message when they arrive at Magrathea. Tonight was the first time I’ve ever realized “traveling zillions of miles across space to a legendary lost alien world, and being greeted by their phone answering machine” is incredibly hilarious

Yes!! I’ve been thinking about it all day!!! And it’s not just that kids have been taught poorly, but that the poor teaching method has been used for decades despite research debunking it as harmful! Reading just seems like such a basic skill, how could anyone mess it up so bad for other people?!
