Likely yapping about housing and the absolute state of things.
Plus, the plan has also left me unsure of my own status. Have I met the undisclosed threshold for "contributing to the UK economy and society" to fast track the new 10 year requirement?

I can't think of anything else in the last 4 years that could have possibly meant weak economic growth.

Our @jrf-uk.bsky.social projections show that living standards are set to fall over this parliament without further action from the government to support families' incomes and address costs.

All eyes on the BoE's (welcome) cut to the bank rate today, but really concerning that energy and water bills are set to push inflation up to 3.7% in Q3 this year.

With over 7 million low-income households already going without essentials, this is v bad news for putting pounds in peoples pockets.

All the while, housing benefits for low income private renters remain frozen, and benefits like Universal Credit are only going up by 1.7%.

Housing costs are soaring, and incomes simply aren't. It's little wonder that we find that living standards are set to fall over this parliament.

Essential reading ahead of Keir Starmer's speech this morning:

Our latest @jrf-uk.bsky.social analysis shows that living standards are set to continue to fall over this parliament for those on the lowest incomes, with the biggest % falls for those in the bottom 20%. Housing costs are a HUGE driver

If the government want to make progress on living standards, on ending the need for food parcels, & truly tackle child poverty - we have got to be bolder in our plan for ending hardship & improving economic security for families across the country.

What can they do immediately? Here's a list

In addition to tenure, the report shows how other groups are disproportionately struggling and going without essentials:

- 86% of those on UC and 93% on UC with deductions
- 81% of households with a Black adult
- 87% of lone parent families and 85% of families with 3+ children.

Housing costs are pushing many low income households into hardship, and our COL survey shows that over 7 in 10 low income renters and mortgage holders are going without essentials, & 52% of low income renters are in arrears.

Over 6 in 10 low income renters spend >40% of their income on rent.

Housing costs play a huge role in why living standards are still set to fall over the coming years, and this chart shows how if the Government is going to make progress on improving living standards, they desperately need to tackle housing costs and incomes

These figures aren't surprising when we see that real disposable incomes after housing costs have been falling, and concerningly, are set to keep falling.

While no income group sees a rise, those in the bottom 20% of incomes are set to see the biggest proportionate fall.

There was literally no change in the number and % of households in the bottom 40% of incomes across our key metrics of hardship.
🔴7 million (60%) going without essentials ..
🔴.. including 5.4 million (46%) who don't have enough money for food
🔴4.3 million (37%) in arrears with bills or credit

Our latest @jrf-uk.bsky.social COL survey is out & it's a dire picture for living standards.

We find ZERO CHANGE since May 24 in low income families going without essentials & being in arrears.

We project this group will be £440 p/y worse off in Oct 29 after housing costs, compared to now.

❄️When I left the house today, my weather app said it felt like -5 degrees outside

Our latest @jrf-uk.bsky.social COL tracker from October tells us that around 1 in 4 low income households (2.9 million families) couldn't afford to heat their homes in the last 6 months. So worrying ahead of winter.

The freeze will pull 50k renters into poverty by the end of the parliament, and 80k into very deep poverty, including 30k children.

If the govt is committed to ending the need for emergency food parcels, and tackling child poverty and homelessness the must stop the freeze. 5/x

Our latest LHA research LHA shows that if the govt keep LHA frozen, private renters on housing benefits will be £243 per year on avg worse off by April 25, rising to £703 by the end of the Parliament.

It's worse again for Londoners and families with children, £882 & £971 respectively 4/x
