I’m graduating today from Masters in Playwriting, which is exciting!

But it also felt necessary to use this occasion to flag up the need for divestment on Palestine and the climate crisis, so myself and coursemates have written to Edinburgh University management and University Court this morning.
A letter, truncated text reads: We are writing as students from the University of Edinburgh’s Masters in Playwriting course, as we graduate today. We would like to register our disappointment at the University as an institution when it comes to responsible investment. Your investments, both direct and indirect, impact human lives across the world now and in the future. For example, directing funds around £50 million to huge asset manager BlackRock which continues to exploit the world’s natural resources for profit and enable weapons companies that supply F35 jets and other weapons that have been used to kill vast civilian populations in Gaza. Regardless of which BlackRock fund the University invests in, using their services enables them - and despite the University having supposedly divested from fossil fuels BlackRock itself has said it “remains supportive of the oil and gas industry”. The University also has almost £5 million directly invested in Amazon, a partner in Project Nimbus, which supplies AI and cloud services to the Israeli military (as well as earning a reputation for maltreating its workers overseas and in the UK), as well as £2.8 million in Google parent company Alphabet, another project partner. Few of us can have been unaffected by the images of horror coming out of Palestine, in and the irony is that nobody can now graduate in Gaza as all the universities have been razed to the ground, and many of their teachers and students have been silenced. We call on the university to divest, not to kick the ball into the long grass with consultations, but to take real and meaningful action now to ensure it isn’t enabling ethnic cleansing and the destruction of the Earth for all of our children and their children.

Just watched In Camera, ooft! Definitely one of the most unique new British films I’ve seen in a while. Liminal, formbending, pitch perfect performances, meditation on the sheer weirdness of late stage capitalism.
