From the latest Marocco declaration -- the review, such as it is, is over:

5,800 USAID awards to be terminated (within next 48 hours)
500 awards to be retained, with ceiling value of $57 billion

4,100 State awards to be terminated
2,700 to be retained

With legal proceedings still pending.

12% is the portion that goes directly to foreign-based implementers (FY2024).

The vast majority of US flagship aid programs -- food aid, PEFPAR, malaria, TB, -- are in the "everything else" pile. They are run by US-based or multilateral implementers and provide in-kind support.

In case it’s not immediately obvious, this figure quoted by Musk is wildly inaccurate.

10% is the portion *given directly to local orgs* — not the portion actually delivered to countries.

More soon on the actual facts — the exact portion is probably unknowable but much, much, much higher.

USAID Administrator Samantha Power @cgdev.org on my favorite topic: Lead!

Thanks to USAID development diplomacy, 12 countries — with combined population > 1 bn — are planning blood lead level surveys. Truly extraordinary.

Lead poisoning found in 76% of Bhutanese kids, and high lead levels found in 44.2% of jinlab samples (a religious powder), 75% of religious items, 50% of brass cookware, and 60% of door fixtures.

Lead (and lead exposure) still finding new ways to surprise and horrify us.

Agree with this from Emily Oster -- one of my top personal bugaboos.

Credibility (from everyone, including public health authorities) comes from being honest and open about trade offs and risks.

Striking subnt'l geographical variation in lead adulteration of turmeric.

Patna (Bihar) levels are astronomical -- 92% of samples above 10μg/g, with maximum level of 2,274ppm.

Karachi--and to a lesser extent Peshawar and Islamabad--also have a problem.

But most other parts of India look ok!
