My guess is that pianos acted in the past more like pieces of furniture. So perhaps they saved - or got it on credit - for a piece of fine musical furniture in their home.

I did, however, learn that this piano is from 1942! He found the original tag inside, and it was $590 at the time. My grandparents were rice farmers, so I have *no* idea how they would have had the money for this.
