For a person who cares more about the law than anyone I know, he cares about people more. And I’m a better lawyer (and person) for having his example.

I can actually name more right-of-center students who attributed their clerkships to his recommendations than left-of-center ones. Which is one of the reasons why students from both sides have tremendous respect for him as a mentor. He’s evenhanded in recognizing talent.

When teaching a legal perspective with which he disagreed, he presented it fairly and allowed students to defend it—pushing them, but validating their growth as independent minds rather than cajoling or manipulating or humiliating them into adopting his perspective.

And I can tell you that when we looked for models on how to conduct ourselves in those debates, many of us looked to Steve Vladeck. He volunteered as tribute for a thousand debates during my time there, and I never once saw him speak disrespectfully to the person on the other side.

But unlike most of us, law students can’t avoid discussing them. So at a time when people were struggling for respectful disagreement among their own families and friends, we were embedded in questions like whether we agreed on the Court’s reasoning in Brown v. Board of Education.

Robust debate was a part of the experience, and aside from the occasional incident, it was mostly healthy and respectful. That wasn’t an easy norm to facilitate at the time. Law students, like most of us, find it challenging to disagree on significant legal and political issues.
