i really had to think abt this cos i realised things don't really "bring me back"? like i'm not visiting the past, more like it's visiting me?
idk but these are some i may not have played in decades but when i think of "games i played as a kid" these are Etched in my brain (way more in alt texts)

i only ever had the demo of SoulTrap but cos i was a kid and bad at video games i never managed to beat it. that's true for so, So many games but for some reason this one sticks out. it had such a genuinely dreamlike atmosphere and i mean that in the most literal way. between the floaty movement, the total absence of bgm and vagueness of the graphics (a product of the era but i'm positive it contributed) this game genuinely felt like that uneasy sort of a dream that was about to become a nightmare - but it never crossed that threshold. i think what made it such a unique experience was that it never left that quiet liminality, it never "got scary" even when i was a kid, it Just Was... Something.

never won a game of age of empires in my damn life except the first one where you can make the setting that there are no enemy teams and you're just living your life. idk if the rest of the franchise had that feature since i never played another one again - i think my brother and i spent enough hours in this one for a lifetime (both with and without the cheats that let you spawn tanks and a soldier with a grenade launcher). also you fuckin KNOW we got this thing in a kellogs cereal box cos that's how god intended.

might have actually played the first Spy Fox within a decade since the series got re-released on steam and i wanted to support my goat. you'd think a point-and-click adventure wouldn't have much replay value once you know the solutions - even the ones on the alternate routes - but for some reason i played this thing over and over. it's not like i had much trouble figuring the puzzles out either, you could press F1 and bring up an official walkthrough. i'm pretty sure i figured SOME things out myself but not a lot. and yet, just the act of going through the motions of "solving" the game was enough to bring me joy. and not even for the story either, you could also press Escape and skip any animation or cutscene that was playing and man did i treat that thing rough - and for what? to skip the story? so i could just click the screen until the credits showed up? why was THIS the speedrun i subconciously wanted to practice? i should have been diagnosed with adhd at the age of 7.

bro this shit was Wild. i haven't played it since i finished it Years ago (another one i couldn't figure out as a kid then went back to after i learned about GameFAQs) but i look it up now and then to remember how creatively strange it was. if SoulTrap felt like a dream that could become a nightmare at any moment, Neverhood felt like the kind of dream that's confounding in the moment but after you wake up and think about it you realise how funny it was. that might just be because i didn't appreciate (or notice) the humour as a kid but once i developed Taste i saw it Everywhere.
there's a slapstick sequence set to Pop Goes the Weasel that i CACKLED at when i rewatched it a month ago - but there's also a hole in the ground with a sign saying "DANGER, DO NOT JUMP" that you can jump down anyway and fall straight through the world, past the other side, and get a Game Over screen as the protag falls through the void forever. both are objectively funny things but for some reason when i was a kid it sparked genuine dread and i couldn't even go near it.
it's weird how that feels like what this game IS in a nutshell. the world it presents is full of character and personality, yet somehow it's also concerning and desolate. i think that's part of why it's "funnier" in retrospect than in the moment, the world is devoid of almost all life besides the protag but when you do encounter something that "interacts back" it's usually absolute gold in one way or another. you remember so many of the good times because they were the most memorable parts of the experience - but at the same time you can't forget that an equal part of that experience is kinda lonely. you almost do when you re-listen to the soundtrack which is just. nobody did it like Neverhood.
the 40-screen walk down the hallway with the literal in-universe Bible written on the wall was deranged on its own, but the fact it was mandatory for completing the game was psychotic. no notes.
