… and 2) Edsall and the rest of the NYT punditry and centrist punditry writ large coming up against the specter of their own contributions and complicity in the current catastrophe. And goodness knows, they will NOT risk that sort of philosophical reflection and self-critique.

So the conclusion should also be: it’s worth trying a mode of analysis, argument, and engagement other than this sucking up to power one Edsall still, rather astoundingly, favors, despite it all. But this would of course require 1) actual thinking outside of pasting block quotes…

The issue here is not that this conclusion is wrong (since, once again, it’s been plain to see for quite awhile), it’s that uncritically accepting the interpretations of reality offered by those in positions of symbolic power (like Pinker, among others) is what got us, and the NYT, to this point.

I think it’s crucial to note that Edsall comes to this plainly obvious conclusion (obvious since this is what Trumpism has been saying out loud all along) on the basis of incredibly facile and superficial ‘analyses’ from the likes of Steven Pinker.

These are the people that are very concerned DEI has stifled speech on college campuses, regulating what can and can’t be said.

Every Dem member should send a police officer or capitol security guard injured on Jan. 6 in their place. Force Trump to either thank them publicly for service that he asserts never happened, or (more likely) berate them for their role in a hoax. Let’s see Lindsay fucking Graham spin that one.

So effective and just that it produced a society in which George Floyd could never happen! Oh wait…

And if the claim is “well, we just want to assert as valid the history not based on the issue of race,” then it’s even more nonsensical, because that history is…nowhere. Because quite simply there is no set of events, ideas, and so on in America completely, wholly untouched by the fact of it.
February 16, 2025 at 7:32 AM
And without history, there is no place in which the supposed formation of the blood and soil of Americanness (the one in need of protection from the great replacement) can have taken place. No history = no medium for ‘Western’ values and character in the US to have ever formed.
