I'm not convinced on the "mostly mechanical" part.
IMHO it is predominantly chemical (the solving, not the washing away); but time and a bit heat can save a lot of detergent.

Not sure this is common in the US, but I'd like to remind everyone to avoid the so‑called 'salt function' in many multi‑function dishwasher pods.
There is no true 'salt function' outside the salt reservoir.
Those pod ingredients only mimic some effects with additives - and lots of extra detergent.
