Just a reader who loves to write about the things she reads. Hoping to build a cosy, book-loving community in which we talk about the books that have made us | Currently reading: Homecoming by Kate Morton
“What if depression is, in fact, a form of grief—for our own lives not being as they should? What if it is a form of grief for the connections we have lost, yet still need?”

Johann Hari, Lost Connections

New rule. A parent may only propose removing a book from the school library only after reading it in its entirety and delivering a book report to the librarian. Until then no discussion shall be entered into.

The quote I need today:

‘There’s no point looking backwards… Just make a choice and then trust yourself to have chosen correctly.’

Today would've been Enid Blyton’s birthday and what better excuse to write about how her books impacted my childhood? But Blyton has been subject to a fair share of criticism. Should this impact our view of her?

The blight on Blyton
On what would have been Enid Blyton's 138th birthday, I take a nostalgic trip to The Enchanted Wood, and find it's not quite how I remembered it...

I'm a bit late to the party, but I've just finished reading this and phew - I understand the fuss. This story is going to stick with me for a while. Really recommend it!

My emotion-fuelled rant about what feels like a rise in people being rude to each other... are we all just trying to reclaim power in a world that makes us feel powerless?

"The only way to prove to yourself that you have power is to use it."
Could this idea from Octavia Butler explain why the world feels so mean right now? Are we all just trying to reclaim power in a world that makes us feel utterly powerless?

Advice for writing/life from Liz Gilbert:

“My fear never had anything more interesting or subtle to offer than that one emphatic word, repeated at full volume on an endless loop: “STOP, STOP, STOP, STOP!” Which means that my fear always made predictably boring decisions...”

God, I love this quote. I just love how Gilbert invites us to step outside of our fears about our writing, and to just put it out there anyway and see what happens.

Onward, with reckless abandon my fellow writers!

Today, I've been writing about the power of books to transport you to entirely new worlds. I'm feeling particularly grateful that this is my hobby - how lucky am I that I get to live a thousand lives?

Tell me what you're reading currrently, and how you're finding it? I'll start - I'm currently reading To Paradise by Hanya Yanagihara, and although I thought it would be quite dense and slow, I'm enjoying it!

Our relationships are reflections of our own self-worth.

In my first Substack article, I look at how the final break-up conversation with my ex helped me realise that I'd been accepting a love that was less than I deserved.
