A screenshot from Magic The Gathering: Arena. I'm playing a Kellan & Keruga deck, opponent is on Rofellos. Rofellos is under my control because of Control Magic, and there's a River's Rebuke on the stack promising to send my opponents creatures back to hand, with little hope to rebuild any time soon. Since the opponent doesn't control Rofellos, I get to keep it, of course.

So Inola's cover story is that of an emissary from the faraway isolationist nation of Hinokami, sent out into the world to 1: forge diplomatic bonds with other factions on the mainland, and 2: spread the word on Hinokami's culture, so that the nation can one day feel safe enough to open its borders again. Inola strongly believes that violence is a failure of diplomacy, and tends to look down on people that like to resort to it. Luckily, the party has yet to get into the kind of trouble that Inola can't de-escalate. (For this next part I really hope none of my fellow players follow me on here) You'll notice I said "cover story" earlier, and not "backstory". One thing that Inola very conveniently tends to leave out of any introductions or negotiations is that Hinokami... doesn't really exist anymore. Somewhere after it closed its borders, the volcano that the nation was built around erupted, turning it from Fantasy Japan into Fantasy Pompeii. Inola was "born" shortly after that disaster; the kitsune kinda just spawned in the middle of the wreckage, half buried in ash, with vague memories of all of the people who used to live there. They say you die twice. Once when you stop breathing, and again when someone speaks your name for the last time. Inola might not have personally lived in Hinokami, but the kitsune has so many happy memories from so many people swirling around upstairs... the only possible way to do right by them is to never let Hinokami die that second death.
