...it's a briskly-moving, entertaining film with a lot of action and not a whole lot of depth; a kind of counterpoint to Goro Miyazaki's somewhat cerebral and slow-moving Tales from Earthsea adaption

These shortcomings actually gave the movie a vague sense of familiarity as they are similar to the (produced-on-a-strict-budget) saturday morning cartoons of the 80ies I grew up on, and if you can approach it at that level,

he animation looks slightly tacky, the character artwork could've used some shadows and detail, the story has a significant amount of plotholes and weird transitions, and given the pedigree of the Tolkien name, the prose of the narration could've really done with some finessing

The bad guys similarly seethe, glower and demonstrate their evil (but slightly tragic) nature over and over like anime villains are wont to do.
I can see why the movie got the 'meh' reviews it did - everything about it is slightly undercooked:

The father of the main Character Hera, king Helm Hammerhand is the best example as he is introduced as an old character but he's actually unfeasibly shredded near unbeatable murder machine, a kind of King Conan, only slightly better educated.

My advice would be to ignore completely what they say and focus on rallying everyone to fight the fight with the university administration. You should not take this type of callous abuse lying down. If need be, make sure they know they are no longer welcome on the campus

It did occur to me while watching this as a date movie that the premise of the film is in some way a slight of the group it purports to revere

I think it was kind of sweet showing him alive in a workshop having not been shot in the face by a crazed 'fan'
