there's a J-horror series that does this but instead of a likable survivor like Sydney, the hero's a cheap video producer, almost an 80s Bill Murray type, recklessly barreling into Ring-style J-horror scenarios mostly to make trashy DVDs and just sort of happening to help people/prove ghosts exist
