It’s not humans. It’s nation states. This is not a controversial statement, it is the accepted orthodoxy of international relations. States help others when it suits them. I would love to see it otherwise - for democracies to act when it is simply the right thing to do.

We need to abandon the “powerful friends” doctrine altogether. There are no “friends” in international relations - only allies. Allies are your friends only for as long as their interests coincide with yours. NZ, Canada, UK are probably the exceptions for Australia. Probably.
