It is a magnet and it’s to hold the needle when I’m not using it. It’s two pieces the magnet, and the metal otter piece and it sticks to the fabric w/o making a hole . It’s called a needle minder. I got this one from Jessica Long Embroidery on Etsy, but you can find them online/most sewing shops.
