Spotted horsemint, Monarda punctata. One of my favorite plants because it's a pollinator magnet for all sizes of bees and wasps. It does well in our poor, sandy soil.

Autumn scene with the dried brown stems of spotted horsemint in the foreground. The verticels (leftover sepals) look like brown pompoms along the stems. Each of those little tubes leftover from each flower contains four tiny nutlets that are the seeds for the next generation. The base of the same spotted horsemint plant, showing new growth (narrow, sword shaped leaves) that will stay mostly green through the winter. It might turn a bit red, but the icy wind doesn't seem to damage it much now that we no longer have snow on the ground all winter, thanks to global warming.

Today we're gathering seeds from whorled milkweed (pictured), anise hyssop, and horsemint in order to replant in other parts of the prairie. #NativePlants #SupportPollinators
A dry, brown milkweed stem with several long, slim pods that have opened to reveal fluffy parachutes on brown teardrop-shaped seeds. This milkweed species is called Asclepias verticillata, whorled milkweed.

Today I collected seeds from the Liatris aspera (Rough Blazing Star) in my front yard. I'll replant them in the prairie.

Ladybug pupae on Carolina horsenettle, Solanum carolinense. I never got around to yanking these thorny native weeds. If ladybugs like them, they can stay for a while longer. #NativePlants

Monarch larva on whorled milkweed, Asclepias verticillata. I'm excited, because I planted three small starts a few years ago and they have spread to cover a large area and have produced many seed pods this year.

A monarch butterfly larva is stretched out on one of the long, narrow seed pods of whorled milkweed. Most of the leaves are missing because they've been eaten by the caterpillar and the caterpillar has also sampled the seed pods in a few places.

Eli Relich Over the past 5 years, only 3 of the estimated 2,840 mass shooters were trans. Trans people are 1~2% of the general population but only 0.04% of mass shooters (98% are cis men). I realize the right doesn't care about statistics but at least we can show how ridiculous they sound.

Monarda punctata (spotted bee balm) starts flowering in mid-summer and goes until frost for me. It does well in my poor, dry soil. Pollinators swarm all over it. So many things to love about this plant! #NativePlants #BloomScrolling

I have been seeing this image lately. It captures the mood for what is happening in the states these days. "The Land of the Free" that once welcomed refugees is now the land of concentration camps.

Common yarrow is looking good, despite the heatwave. Last year at this time it was already brown and crispy due to lack of rain. #nativeplants #climatechange

I spent some time in my yard before and after today's demonstration watching the #Honeybees on the Nanking cherry blossoms. I hope we won't get a late frost from the wonky jet stream so that we'll have some cherries to harvest this year.

Granted, there aren't many.

Mine would be Dr. Aspen / Captain Angel played so brilliantly by Jesse James Keitel on Star Trek Strange New Worlds.

I had to dig around to find this seed packet - Ceanothus americanus, New Jersey Tea. It will be an accomplishment to sow the seeds properly and end up with a few living shrubs, due to all the challenges of chronic fatigue. Wish these little seeds luck! #NativePlants

Seeds waiting very patiently in their seed packets to be winter sown - someday. The plain typewriter font labels read: Lupinus perennis (sundial lupine), Amorpha canescens (lead plant), Monarda punctata (spotted bee balm), and Artemesia ludoviciana (prairie sage.) The bee balm doesn't actually require stratification, but it's with the others for solidarity.
