Yeah, I agree with this, and Patreon would be a great candidate to help solve that. My point was that there are workarounds they can use *today* while helping standardize custom audiences.

Isn't that the same problem Patreon already has? Their distribution is currently all off-platform for basic discovery. I'm not saying this will solve all their problems, but it makes no sense for something like this to be as locked down as it currently is.

But Masto doesn't need to support that? Patreon can just have tier actors Mastodon accounts follow like Bonfire circles.

Bonfire has done this as well! It's not impossible, and I would hope Patreon would build within their platform rather than directly on top of Masto.

Seriously, I can't think of a company better suited for the open social web, and I will not shut up about it. I don't care if it's ActivityPub or ATProto - if they're truly creator-first, they need to be on a standard that lets creators and their audiences choose where they interact.
