There’s a time and place for collaboration and learning. Especially for junior staff who need training and mentorship. But let those people arrange it however it suits them. Set goals. Let them show you they can do it.

It’s about control. Managers who must see their workers working and not slacking aren’t able to fathom having adult employees who are able to get stuff done on their own. Like helicopter parents

How do you gain efficiencies if you want your workers to spend time chatting about work? Where do you bill that time towards? How is it tracked?

So it’s a false pretence. They want to reduce headcount. That’s it. It’s your “choice” if you don’t want to (read: can’t) come into the office 5 days a week.
