Two people were killed this evening at Brown University by a gunman who remains at large. Eight others are injured, fighting for their lives in a nearby hospital. This senseless violence-once considered unfathomable-has become nauseatingly normal to all of us across our nation. Tonight, on the eve of the anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting, we find ourselves in mourning once again. The epidemic of gun violence stretches across America. We reckon with it when we step into our houses of worship and out onto our streets, when we drop our children off at kindergarten and when we fear if those children, now grown, will be safe on campus. But unlike so many other epidemics, we possess the cure. We have the power to eradicate this suffering from our lives if we so choose. I send my deepest condolences to the families of the victims, and to the Brown and Providence communities, who are wrestling with a grief that will feel familiar to far too many others. May we never allow ourselves to grow numb to this pain, and let us rededicate ourselves to the enduring work of ending the scourge of gun violence in our nation.

PRESS RELEASE Labor Movement Delivers Bipartisan Victory as House Passes Bill to Restore Federal Workers' Union Rights December 11, 2025 Republicans and Democrats Successfully Use Discharge Petition for Vote to Overturn Trump Executive Order (Washington, D.C.)—-A bipartisan majority in the House of Representatives voted to pass the Protect America's Workforce Act (H.R. 2550) today, a bill that would restore collective bargaining rights to 1 million federal workers by reversing President Trump's March executive order. Following that order, the Trump administration has escalated its attacks, stripping away even more collective bargaining rights by unilaterally canceling union contracts for 700,000 federal workers. With nearly 70% of Americans supporting unions, politicians face a clear mandate to protect workers' rights and the freedom to have a voice on the job. The bipartisan bill, introduced by Reps. Jared Golden (Maine) and Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.), came to the floor for a vote by a rare discharge petition and passed 231-195 with support from Republicans and Democrats. It is the first time the House of Representatives has voted to overturn a Trump executive order during his second term. "President Trump betrayed workers when he tried to rip away our collective bargaining rights. In these increasingly polarized times, working people delivered a rare bipartisan majority to stop the administration's unprecedented attacks on our freedoms," said AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler. "We commend the Republicans and Democrats who stood with workers and voted to reverse the single largest act of union-busting in American history." "Americans trust unions more than either political party. As we turn to the Senate-where the bill already has bipartisan support-working people are calling on the politicians we elected to stand with us, even if it means standing up to the union-busting boss in the White House." A bipartisan companion bill to restore federal workers' rights has already been introduced in the Senate with 48 original co-sponsors, and more than 15 active lawsuits are challenging the administration's executive order in the courts as the labor movement fights to rein in this illegal power grab.

TERM Artificial Intelligence (Al) The phrase 'artificial intelligence was coined by McCarthy et al. (1955) in the context of proposing a summer workshop at Dartmouth College in 1956. They assumed significant progress could be made on making machines think like people. In the present, Al has no fixed meaning. It can be anything from a field of study to a piece of software. Artificial neural network (ANN) First proposed in McCulloch and Pitts (1943), it is a mathematical model, comprised of interconnected banks of units that perform matrix multiplication and non-linear functions. These statistical models are exposed to data (input-output pairs) that they aim to reproduce. While held to be inspired by the brain, such claims are tenuous or misleading. Chatbot An engineered system that appears to converse with the user using text or voice. Speech synthesis goes back hundreds of years (Dudley 1939; Gold 1990; Schroeder 1966) and Weizenbaum's (1966) ELIZA is considered the first chatbot (Dillon 2020). VanderPlas broke down some of the statistics faculty findings to The Daily Nebraskan in October. She pointed to the number of degrees awarded as one of the flawed metrics. The undergraduate statistics program, which started in 2021, was included in the calculation. However, since its first students won't graduate until this spring, the metric made the department's numbers look worse than they actually were. (Highlighted) Other errors they found included numerous data errors, such as misplaced decimal points and incorrectly typed data! "They did exactly what we expected, Elizabeth Niehaus, a professor of educational administration said. "They did not listen to a word we said." Several education administration faculty members joined together to propose an alternative to cutting programs. They proposed major restructuring of UNL and UNMC by centralizing administrative positions through the NU system. It mirrors how some other Big Ten schools are organized. Specifically, they proposed eliminating the chancellor's offices at UNL and UNMC and other top administrative positions. Elizabeth Niehaus, a professor of educational administration, estimates it would save $6.5 million, a figure similar to the program eliminations.

Two years on, the new owner, Sansome Street Advisors, sold the building once again, this time for $42.5 million to Tidewater Capital. With tech workers partying in Uptown after work every day, the building's value had ballooned 170% in three years. Then came the Covid-19 pandemic. Tech companies walked away from offices they had just leased as workers stayed home, sending vacancy rates skyrocketing. The Syndicate Building was one of the first Oakland office properties to return to its lender when Tidewater Capital surrendered it to BrightSpire Capital in 2023. In January, 1440 Broadway traded hands again - this time, for just $5.2 million, 88% lower than its last sale and roughly a third of what it sold for in the beginning of that chain of purchases. The buyer, Frontline Realty Capital, believes it is getting in ahead of a cycle similar to last decade's, with artificial-intelligence startups flooding San Francisco and driving prices higher across the bridge. Frontline has already invested roughly $1 million into 1440 Broadway so far, growing occupancy at the building by more than 25%.
