Everything is so buggy now. Creating a new Marketplace listing was completely broken for a while unless you downloaded their app. And searching for an item on there is half broken—something is “out of my search area” when it’s a mile away, or it just doesn’t show results for listings that are there.

Becky Rosso works as a tech executive now and she interviewed me a few years ago.

There are also more expensive ones that can get slightly better texture… but you’re paying like 4x more for it, so unless you really really like rice, probably not worth it.

Short Wave from NPR is actually doing a series on the water and energy use of AI right now. The first episode I listened to was good!

Exactly. And those arguments ignore that all this energy and water is expensive for AI companies, and they are losing a lot of money because of that. They’re already putting a lot of effort into improving efficiency because they need to in order to survive long term.

I totally agree. Generative AI has its flaws, but a lot of criticisms don’t try to understand the reality of the technology. There are conversations to be had about training data and environmental impact, for example! But we can’t have those if it ends at “all AI is and always will be bad”.

I sold my Kindle on FB marketplace and bought a Kobo and have been really happy with it—they don’t push their store so hard, and it’s less locked down. For now, it’s still possible to remove DRM from Kindle ebooks, but it’s getting a lot harder. I’m glad I got my books out while I still could.

Next time on The Inside Man…

Yep. When I need something in corporate America jargon it is perfect for that. I give it normal English and it gives me “driving value for clients” and “strategic innovation”. I am bad at writing like that myself, and I don’t want to be good at it.

There is a going out of business sale, but since their normal prices are inflated because of constant sales and coupons, the “blowout” prices so far have not actually been much of a discount over normal.

For me I feel like seeing all the discourse around political news is the part that isn’t helpful. I have a long list of muted words on Bluesky that reduces the political posts I see, and I largely keep up with news elsewhere, where there isn’t as much panic and despair.

Oh it also looks like cable reverse crunches are a thing. I personally prefer reverse crunches over regular ones so I might give the cable variant a try.

Ab machine if you have access to one, or cable crunches. I have been doing cable crunches because there aren’t that many weighted options. You’ll probably want to try different positions (kneeling/standing, towards or away from the cable) to find what works for you; I’ve found that tricky.

For shoulders, I’m usually doing the Smith machine shoulder press and even when I have hit failure on that, I can still make the bar up far enough to lock it with a wrist twist. I set the safety stops too just in case but have yet to need them. Can’t say it’s my favorite exercise though.

I was using a different gym for a month that didn’t have cables so I tried a bunch of triceps exercises with dumbbells. It was difficult to get a weight that worked for me for any of them; either it was too easy or with a higher weight I felt like I was risking an injury if I hit failure.

Triceps pushdown and overhead triceps extension are the ones I do. It’s also worth trying changing the attachment—personally I don’t really like the rope, so I use the EZ bar for both of these.

Do you have a cable machine? There are some triceps exercises with that I don’t hate.
