Abstract In this article, I present two moments of interaction emerging from a focus group between young people who are members of a community of practice: a support group for transgender youth and their parents. Using discourse analysis, I demonstrate how the young people work collaboratively to construct a mutual identity, which foregrounds their shared experience of transgender issues and minimises differences between them. I argue that they do this to actively challenge and resist the discrimination they experience due to transphobia and ignorance, which includes attempts to ‘other’ them. I show how the young people ascribe themselves agency by subverting the heteronormative ideologies which inform this othering, thus constructing an active, resistant and validated mutual identity rather than a victimised, submissive or othered one. This identity work tells us much about the hugely important role played by support groups in helping young people to construct a positive persona in the face of transphobic discrimination. Abstract. This paper examines language ideologies surrounding the perceived indexicality of gendered pronouns among speakers who use multiple pronoun sets. Through a discourse analysis of research interviews with speakers who use multiple pronouns in English, I argue that these language ideologies must be understood as grounded in trans epistemologies—trans-affirming ways of thinking and knowing about gender that emerge from trans communities—to understand how such ideologies both resist and align with dominant understandings of the exclusive and constitutive relationship between pronouns and gender. The analysis not only expands our understanding of multiple pronoun use, but also broader gendered language practices among trans, nonbinary, and other gender-diverse speakers. In doing so, it further demonstrates the need for a trans linguistics (Zimman 2020) that highlights the relevance of trans ways of knowing to our understanding of language and gendered practice.

Abstract Despite being one of the most popular forms of media, videogames are an under-researched text type within linguistics. This paper examines the language used within videogames, specifically in relation to how videogame writers index the identities of transgender characters. Utilising data from the LGBTQ Video Game Archive (Shaw, 2017), which documents the history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer content in games, I identify 22 videogames which contain references to transgender characters. A close qualitative reading of instances where transgender characters occur reveals two broad trends: i) there are multiple instances where such representation is unclear and ii) transgender identities are rarely overtly indexed. Within this second trend, I specifically focus on the role of implicature and inferencing in how transgender identities are constructed. That is, how these characters implicitly “come out” to the player and the shared knowledge needed to understand these implicatures. I argue that such shared knowledge is influenced by the social identities and lived experiences of the interpreter, which should be considered in the degree to which meaningNN is considered relevant. The research presented has implications for analysing more coming-out narratives and creating more connections between pragmatics, language, gender, and sexuality studies, as well as videogame/media studies.

Cadernos de Linguistica Home Issues News About Abstract In this paper, I develop a holistic framework for an anti-disciplinary project based in and encompassing the intellectual critiques of colonialism, imperialism, and racism within linguistics in addition to subsuming queer and trans programs of linguistic thought in queering the science of language. This anti-disciplinary project presents a defense of iconoclastic forms of knowledge production that explicitly reject a priori assumptions of the orthodox linguistic canon’s primacy as a body of knowledge and seeks to engage ulterior and auxiliary modes of language science. In rejecting the notion of linear scientific progression – the humanist notion of progress as forward-facing – this project furthermore seeks to move beyond simple critiques, apologetics, and hagiographies and work toward a true repositioning of the field and a productive reimagination of the discipline. To that end, I outline four anti-disciplinary concepts – hetero-cistoriography, transcriptivism, decentralization, and systamatic professionalism – which I argue are productive points of departure from the institution of discipline.

Most trans people change their name in accordance to their gender in the process of transitioning. The decision for a new name can take place at any stage during an individual’s exploration of their identity, typically coming into use when the individual comes out to others and asks to be addressed with this new name. Whether or not this new name is accepted and adopted by others is not only a matter of time, but correlates to the acceptance of the “new” gender and thus of a person’s right to change their name. This article offers an analysis of trans name change announcements as performative speech acts and analyses the reactions to this name change, i.e. the acceptance or refusal of this new name, in relation to the speech act’s felicity conditions.

U-Bahnansagen der Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe – soziophonetische Konstruk- tion eines regionalen oder internationalen Berlins? Lars Sörries-Vorberger Die vorliegende Studie beschäftigt sich mit der konzeptionellen und akustischen Umsetzung des neuen Sound- Brandings der Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG), die im Jahr 2023 alle öffentlichen Verkehrsansagen neu aufge- nommen und eingesetzt haben. Die eingesprochenen Ansagen stammen von der Schauspielerin und Spreche- rin Philippa Jarke, deren Stimm-Identität laut BVG-Marketing unter anderem berlinerisch und aus Versehen eigen sein soll sowie die Sound-Identität international und Berliner Schnauze. Während die BVG in ihren grafi- schen Werbekampagnen weniger regional registrierte Merkmale als etwa der Hamburger Verkehrsverbund umsetzt, zielt die Untersuchung darauf ab, die phonetische Evidenz hinter dieser intendierten „akustischen Identität“ zu analysieren. Im Rahmen der soziophonetischen Untersuchung wird ein detaillierter Vergleich der Ansagen der 182 U-Bahn- Stationen der BVG durchgeführt. Da die Aufnahmen professionell produziert wurden, ist eher weniger von remanenten Merkmalen als von möglicherweise bewusst eingesetzten regional registrierten Merkmalen aus- zugehen. Zu den Methoden der Analyse gehören die qualitative Bestimmung regionaler Merkmale (bspw. g- Spirantisierung) sowie die akustische Messung von 514 Vokalen in Bezug auf F1 und F2. Darüber hinaus werden 205 Grundfrequenzverläufe analysiert, wobei Durchschnittswerte, Variabilität und Umfang der Frequenzen er- fasst werden. Um die „akustische Identität“ der BVG-U-Bahnansagen im Kontext soziolinguistischer Theorien zu verstehen, werden Konzepte wie indirekte Indexikalität, Enregisterment und Metapragmatik herangezogen.
