when one of my kids was about two years old he forgot all about the sun during a Portland winter and when he saw it again in the spring he was terrified, like it was a nuclear holocaust, all shrieking.

People would be more likely to treat air travel as an occasion if they were themselves treated, as one once was, as valued guests throughout the experience. And if you were less likely to need to sleep on the floor in the airport. But this guy's job is to get you where you're going, not lecture you.

Biography is always in: it sells books. People find it easier to understand what they're buying when it's "Agrippina!" or "Nero!" than when it's "Poverty in the Roman World." But they read about antiquity to feel like they're inheritors of the master race, so eg. Guns Germs and Steel also sells.

Their motive seems to me to be mostly power, not sex. They mostly don’t get sex from it, but they like seeing the look of fear in your eyes.
