The people objectively want a better economy. For whatever reason they're willing to put tariffs on themselves just to stick it to companies operating overseas. That's right wing economic populism.

It's entirely possible to do economic populism without class conflict. But the people yearn for class conflict.

I think even if you removed the profit incentive people would still consume massive amounts of food and other materials that need to be shipped over seas. The market facilitates this, but ultimately it's not the cause of demand.
