Good. The reporting here has focused too little on Summers as himself a predator:

bsky.app/profile/quan...
The reporting on Larry Summers has totally missed the point. It’s not just about him pal-ing around with Epstein.

It’s about his predatory actions against junior Female colleagues and mentees.

Notice that he doesn’t even apologize for the despicable sexual harassment he was doing

100%! I have been really disappointed that the reporting has not talked about Summers himself being a predator:

This man should not be allowed to be around young women or students in general.

“Stepping back from public engagements” is not a sufficient remedy. He needs to be ejected from academia forever.

Ya totally, it is shocking reveal of privilege that this person thinks working at 9pm is something extraordinary. I work on emails and papers every evening at this time.

Is it “radically leftist” to believe that marginalized groups should not be excluded from NIH research? …that throwing away public resources by terminating studies just before they complete?

If so, I wear the label proudly.

And it is absolutely my job to criticize such policies at work.

Shame on them Jenna. I am proud of you. May your bravery permeate to all of us.

The hypocrisy is astonishing

I bring this up because I think it is important that scientists understand what is actually going on, rather than an idealized version where scientists are still making the calls.

Grants with fundable scores can be killed by political review. This happens.

The National Institutes of Health’s long-held standard of peer review for grantmaking has been subverted by President Donald Trump and NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, who gave unprecedented power to po...

This figure is how it worked pre-Trump. But now, there are multiple points of political review that are ultimately the arbiters -- above even council.

Multiple things are true here:

- Ezra whitewashed Kirk

- Winning elections matters; moral purity is good for pundits and philosophers and BSky warriors, but bad for everyone else

- Ezra's style of 500 words of pontification followed by a question is extremely annoying.

Theresa and her brethren are legit heroes. I often feel in awe of their courage.

I want to agree with these guys but it is pretty 🙄 that they seem to have no hesitation about making my unfunded abstracts available to anyone

And it’s about people around us — people we love, our neighbors, our friends, our children — who will never benefit from this knowledge because it was stolen from them.

They may die or suffer, and it needn’t have been the case.

It is a form of violence that Vought has inflicted on us all.

If I may add, it’s not just about our colleagues on these grants that should have been funded but were not. That is a shame but it is not the entire tragedy.

It’s also about the discoveries and wonderful things we may never know because this science was not done.

Gerrymandering and the supreme court are the best examples. R's have a first mover and structural advantage in a way they can consolidate power even against broad democratic (small d) wishes.

It is an orthogonal and deeply insidious strategy vs just making a political case to try and win elections.
September 9, 2025 at 6:13 PM
This is what I worry about most. Once you poison the well of trust that underpins the system, then what we really have is a game of political brinksmanship. And the R's have advantages in winning that because of demographics and because they frankly have no qualms destroying the country to "win"

Thank you for providing these figures/data and advocating on behalf of scientists.

Progress is not linear or assured. But this country can surprise us. Things are worse than I ever expected but I still have hope. Trump is like -8% in approval ratings. It is not a situation where we have a dictator with large-scale approval... yet
